Fun Fact:
Stair steppers/climbers exploded in popularity in the mid-1980s (the original StairMaster 5000 launched in 1983), but early adopters were so obsessed that gyms had to enforce time limits on the machines because people would hog them for 60+ minutes straight. A 1989 New York Times "Metropolitan Diary" entry described a woman so addicted to her StairMaster that she called it "Stairmaster, I love you!" — while noting it "doubles the torture in half the time."

The weird part? Many users today still treat sessions as self-punishment rituals: viral TikTok/Reddit trends (2021–2025) show people doing "lung-crushing" 30–60 minute climbs while watching TV or listening to podcasts, then posting captions like "Why do I pay to suffer?" or "The machine wins again."

One 2023 TikTok trend even had users timing themselves until they "felt death" — turning a cardio tool into a voluntary endurance torture device, exactly like its prison-treadmill ancestors.
