Fun Fact:
In the late 2010s–early 2020s, a subset of parents on parenting forums and TikTok started calling playpens "baby jails" unironically — and many openly admitted to using them as personal timeout zones for themselves. A 2021 informal poll on r/Mommit (over 1,200 votes) found ~42% of respondents said they put their toddler in the playpen not just for safety, but so they could finally pee, shower, eat a hot meal, or scroll TikTok in peace for 10–15 minutes without being climbed on. The phrase "mommy needs jail time" became a meme — parents joking that the playpen was less for the kid's safety and more for the parent's survival. Child safety experts (AAP, 2022) still warn against prolonged use because it can delay motor development, but many parents reply: "I'd rather have a delayed walker than a dead mom."
